Monday = "M" Day
Some time ago I made an observation that if I could pick only one first letter for bands it would be "m"--Minor Threat, Metallica, the Misfits, Mission of Burma, the Minutemen and Motorhead would all place entries on at least my top 100 Desert Island Discs. Leaving off the first one since I covered them yesterday, here goes:
Metallica - "Fade to Black"
Nice live clip from 1985 of a song that nobody following this blog caught me doing karaoke of in Gilbert, AZ. The debate rages on as to whether RtL or MoP is the better album.
Misfits - "She"
First time I really paid attention to them was on the CD collection which this kicks off. Some hardcore kids actually bought CD players just because collecting all of this on vinyl (even back in 1987-1988) was at least a $250 proposition.
Mission of Burma - "Academy Fight Song"
Not sure of the origin of this video, but the song holds true 30 years on. In another common debate, I'm sticking with this one over the other hit--later covered by Moby.
Minutemen - "Do You Want New Wave or Do You Want the Truth?"
Live performance from 1985. I'll say something more another week.
Motorhead - "Ace of Spades"
Can you ever go wrong with this?
Main Source - "Looking at the Front Door"
Needed to add some rap (I never called it hip hop until around about the late 1990's) and this gem from what I consider it's strongest year overall filled the bill when looking for an artist starting with "M". Surprised to find that this was a self-produced job and not by Marley Marl
and that this album also featured Nas' debut.
Mudhoney - "You Got It"
The song that got me into grunge. I'm not embarrassed to admit that.
Running count: 20 songs for 2011.
